ARTIST STATEMENTS
Ree Katrak
Ree’s paintings are distinctive in color and abstract mark making. Her process is influenced by current modern themes and the expressionist movement. Ree says her art comes more from the heart than the mind, it is an expression of thoughts and feelings. Her process starts out spontaneously, then progresses in a more considered way. Ree was born in San Francisco, CA and currently lives in Exeter, NH. Her work has been shown nationally in galleries and is included in numerous private collections.
Martha Rives
Martha’s new artwork is made using a layering of corrugated cardboard and other materials in a raised relief. She uses acrylic paint and tissue paper decoupage as a finishing surface to add color and texture to her designs. She had been using paper-based and recycled materials with her High School art students for many years, and when she retired she wanted to try some ideas using these same materials, creating designs on multiple panels. Fascinated with the look of multiple images for a long time, Martha feels they increase the power of the idea, partly because she would put student work up on a display board and the impact of the multiple pieces arranged together was inspiring.

More about Marcus Rabb
Marcus Rabb is a Jazz trumpeter, vocalist, and educator. He has led his own groups for over 25 years in Florida, Washington, D.C., St. Croix, Massachusetts, and now New Hampshire.
Marcus earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music Degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. He studied trumpet with Fred Irby III, and jazz composition and arranging with the late Reppard Stone. It was there that he developed an appreciation for other genres including European Classical music, Caribbean and Latin music, Eastern music, and of course, American Jazz: “My years at Howard afforded me many opportunities to share the stage with some incredible musicians. It also taught me how to prepare for a professional career in music.”
Marcus has been a music educator for over two decades, “I have always believed in helping my students learn how to listen to music. It seems simple but there are so many things that can prevent us from truly appreciating the beauty and value of music from other cultures and perspectives. My goal at Exeter is to invite collaboration and get students to make connections with each other through music.”
Now in his first year as the Director of Bands and Jazz Studies at Philip Exeter Academy, Marcus is eager to be a part of the jazz community in New Hampshire, having formed the latest iteration of his “Marcus Rabb Quartet.” The group plays standard jazz repertoire, original material as well as their own interpretations of contemporary pop songs, “I just want to continue the legacy of playing and promoting jazz music, and making people feel good.”

6-8pm : Family Friendly Costume Party in the Main Hall
Dress as an author, in the style of any historical period, as a literary or film character, or just come as yourself. Costume NOT required. Live & DJ music, dance performances, kids activities, costume contest, photo booth. Featuring music from Groove Lounge, Romany dance demonstration from Miri Keliphen, and aerial silk performance from Hannah Beck.
7-9pm : Joe Hill & Bitter Pill in the 2nd Floor Gallery
Joe Hill is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Fireman and Heart-Shaped Box. His novel, Horns, was made into a feature film starring Daniel Radcliffe, and his book NOS4A2 is forthcoming as a TV series from AMC. His book of short stories, 20th Century Ghosts, won the Bram Stoker Award and British Fantasy Award for Best Collection. His most recent work, Strange Weather, is a collection of four short novels. Joe will do a short reading, Q&A, and book signings.
Bitter Pill plays a dark and anachronistic combination of bluegrass, country, vaudeville and psychobilly. They just released their critically-acclaimed first album, “Prepare Your Throats,” a collection of traditional and original songs from the soundtrack of their staging of William Shakespeare’s grotesquely ridiculous abomination of a play, “Titus Andronicus”, which NHPR called “Exhilarated. Stimulated.” There will also be literary readings and open mic poetry.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children/seniors in advance, and $13/$8 at the door.
Proceeds from the event will help raise funds for the Exeter LitFest and the 2019 Exeter Arts & Music Fest.

David Drouin / Exeter, NH / Cold Engines
David Drouin is an accomplished singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer with over a dozen albums to his name. As frontman for The Brew and Cold Engines, he’s toured nationally and shared the stage with the likes of Bruce Hornsby, Los Lobos, and Blues Traveler. His introspective songs highlight melody and groove, while inspiring interconnectivity of styles including soul, rock, folk and pop. The Brew placed two songs in the national Top 100 billboard charts and won the New England Music Award for best band in Boston. Cold Engines claimed Best Rock Band 2016 and Song Of The Year 2017.
Todd Hearon / Exeter, NH / MYRTLE
Born in Texas and raised in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, Todd Hearon brings the traditional sounds of those regions to his songwriting, along with the more contemporary edge of rock and Americana. He’s the award-winning author of two collections of poems, STRANGE LAND and NO OTHER GODS, as well as number of plays and essays. In addition to gigging solo around the seacoast, he can be found playing with his trio, MYRTLE, or hammering out old-timey numbers on banjo and mandolin with the Boston-based BarnBurners String Band.
Chad Verbeck / Exeter, NH / RockSpring
Chad Verbeck’s songwriting is an uplifting throwback to his folk and bluegrass roots. A New Hampshire native who spent several years honing his chops on the Colorado music scene, he uses his unique voice to combine his tastes into one creative flavor, melding elements of rock, soul and pop. His guitar playing easily jumps from one style to the next even within songs and allows him to hand craft his touching ballads, gritty sea-shanty’s and humorous blues-laced stories into fine listening pieces. His solo albums and most recent release from his band RockSpring, “One Horse Town” have found their way onto countless “Best Of” regional lists.

Show Runs Through April By Appointment
An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but will never break.
- CHINESE PROVERB
"There are many different interpretations and versions of this proverb, but I think it is evident in my latest body of work. All of my lines are physically connected, flowing through and around the subjects. Sometimes the subject IS the lines, in my more abstract pieces. Connections are everywhere, even though many are invisible. When I paint, I let one thing lead into another with lines, or 'threads' of continuation. Painting in this way allows me to show the natural flow of energy throughout my compositions. The energy is usually positive and culminating in a point of light. No matter how far we may try to distance ourselves from people or places or things, we will forever remain connected by fate, by destiny, by that thin red thread that loops and curves and tangles us all together in our humanity."
- Sharon Marcella Marston
Sharon Marcella Marston grew up in New England and has been creating art for over 30 years. She graduated from Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine in May of 1995. Since then she has exhibited in shows and taken on freelance work, much of which consists of custom pieces, digital painting and graphic design.
Sharon currently lives in East Kingston, New Hampshire with her family. Home is her favorite place to be. She is surrounded by woodlands and open fields. She enjoys gardening and taking care of the animals on her small farm. Her surroundings give her ample inspiration and freedom to create the art that fills her soul.
Shift register @
foundation
art space
“Shift Register” is a group exhibition, on view from March 2nd until March 24th at FOUNDATION Art Space, located at 111R Water Street, Exeter NH. The show is guest curated by Shaina Gates, and features the work of artists Andy Heck Boyd, Julie K Gray, Mike Howat, Scott Kuckler, Kris Lanzer, Catherine Scala, Marta Spendowska, and Annie Zverina.
The opening will be March 2nd, from 5-8pm, free and open to the public.
The title of the show refers to an electronic system for processing information quickly, and works as an analogy for the kind of intuitive processing that forms the logic of the exhibition. A shift register is an electronic component that receives a binary number and sifts to the right or left. A shift to the right divides the binary number, and a shift to the left multiplies the number. The exiting information is dependent on the entering information. The more complex the shift register’s pattern, the more random the generated output may appear.
The artworks included in the show run the gamut of media, processes, and subjects. From sound and video installations all the way to representational drawings, the work is notably varied. The organizing concepts for such a wide-ranging exhibition come together around ideas of layers, shifts, and changing positions. Inherent in the production of the work itself are various feedback loops, and perceptive switches that keep the viewer’s experience in a state of searching.
Artists Included:
Andy Heck Boyd’s sound/video work was chosen for the way it deals with endurance as related to his extreme prolificity. The activity of this work retraces its own patterns until a sense of the uncanny enshrouds the viewer.
andyheckboyd.net
Julie K Gray’s needlepoints of mugshots use digital processing and anonymous portraits in a way that both distances the viewer and draws them in with her intense craftsmanship and subtlety.
juliekgray.com
Mike Howat’s quiet, velvety drawing surfaces present carefully positioned architectural forms. His imagery calls the attention outward with its technical perspective, then drifts back to the plane of the paper with the irresistible materiality of the graphite.
mikehowat.com
Scott Kuckler’s silver gelatin photographs are pushed beyond traditional chemical processing, producing accretions and erosions in concert with the gauzy ambiguity of the images themselves.
scottkuckler.com
Kris Lanzer’s large ink drawings on tracking paper rolls record the original presence of fallen tree logs as shadows. The ink silhouettes, as material stand-ins for the immaterial shadow, slip into position as the trees themselves when hung vertically on the wall.
krislanzer.com
Catherine Scala’s paintings reference mapping using geometric abstraction, building up strata of transparent layers, revealing the history of their making.
catherinescalastudio.com
Marta Spendowska’s painting showcases flows of saturated pigment that expand and stain the surface, ultimately coming to rest in a frozen image of fluidity.
verymarta.com
Annie Zverina’s projected installation takes an offhand historic anecdote, and multiplies its importance through research and invention presented with an impassive voice, spinning out a compellingly enigmatic reading for the audience.
anniezverina.com
Uncanniness, distancing and intimacy, de-located perspective, obscuration, approximation, obtuseness; a necessarily baroque list of themes—but ones that tangle together into a general sense of mutability. Mutability of the audience’s position, the artists’ positions, and the location of the subject in the work.
FOUNDATION Art Space is run by the non-profit TEAM and Arts Industry Alliance. They are committed to the ongoing development of their exhibition calendar, featuring solo and group shows throughout the year, with openings on First Fridays each month. TEAM can be reached at TEAMExeter.com. Shaina Gates can be reached through ShainaGates.com.
Gallery Hours for “Shift Register” will be Thursdays 12-5, Fridays 5-7, and Saturdays 11-1 (the gallery will be closed March 15-17th).

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED !!
New date is Friday, April 6th, 2018
Join us for a night of dance, music and education to celebrate multi-culturalism in New Hampshire, featuring Deo Mwano, Movement From Above and special guests.
------------------------------------------------
Deo Mwano is a visionary choreographer and dancer. He has been studying and training for over 10 years in the genres of fusion jazz, street jazz, African dance and a variety of hip hop styles. He has conducted dance workshops all over the U.S., and has had opportunities to showcase his choreography internationally. In 2010, Deo appeared in a TV special for the show "Dancing With The Stars", where he choreographed and performed with his brothers and the professional dancers on the show. Deo collaborated with Kim Johnson, whom he co-choreographed the cha cha/ Hip Hop routine that was featured on the show.
A daring escape from the Democratic Republic of the Congo led Deo Mwano to a life of freedom, inspiration, appreciation, and the desire to persevere to excel. This has led him to be an innovative, multi-cultural leader in education, organizational leadership and social justice. He teaches, inspires, and motivates students to follow a path of self-improvement and dedication to others. In doing so, Deo draws on his often traumatic personal experience as well as his educational background.
Growing up during a violent civil war, Deo faced much misfortune. At age nine, he became the patriarch of the family. It wasn’t easy. But after moving to the United States in 2000 with his mother and three younger brothers, he found his voice.
A gifted performer and presenter, Deo connects with others through dance and motivational speaking. His talents have been welcomed at Yale University, NHPR’s Word of Mouth, The Moth storytelling at GCIR annual event, TEDxAmoskeagMillyard, Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC), WJLA TV, and Politics and Prose, which emphasized the importance of global and social awareness.
Deo works with international and national businesses, universities and nonprofits. His core strengths include Discipline Expertise and Action Expertise. As a discipline expert, he helps people understand what impacts their behaviors (the Will-Drivers). He has worked with diverse demographic groups, studying “Motivation to Action”.
Deo earned his BA in International Relations and History and MBA in Strategic Leadership. His honors include being recently named to 40 Under 40 as an emerging leader in New Hampshire.

TEAM To Host First Solo Exhibition Featuring The Work of Shaina Gates
“EYE LEVEL,” a new exhibit featuring the work of Shaina Gates, opens on October 6th, from 5-9pm at Foundation Art Space to coincide with First Friday. The intimate mixed-use gallery, studio, and office space serves as headquarters for non-profit organizations TEAM and Arts Industry Alliance, located at 111R Water Street, Exeter, NH, on the river side of the downtown storefronts.
Shaina Gates is an emerging artist, who lives and works in Exeter. She has shown her work in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, and the Cape Cod Museum of Art. “EYE LEVEL” is a solo exhibition of Gates’ intimately scaled oil paintings depicting folded and crumpled black paper. The paintings use a limited palette—mixing color to create the blacks and greyed hues that appear as light and shadow falling across creases on paper. These are highly realistic, intensely detailed images. They are reminiscent of traditional trompe lœil paintings, except that the illusion extends right to the edges; the paintings seem to become actual pieces of paper.
Several of the works are of folded and unfolded origami figures, which their titles refer to (e.g. “Coyote,” “Lady Slipper”). When these paper figures are unfolded and smoothed out, the record of the creases remain embedded in the surface. The way the light breaks across the paper as a result, is of particular focus throughout this body of work.
Other paintings show paper that has been crumpled in the hand and flattened back out. The relation between the seemingly random structure of these, and the organized geometry of the origami paintings, reveals an interesting similarity. It becomes apparent that there is little difference in these creased patterns; only the level of complexity in the angles. With the crushed paper paintings, the viewer might be reminded of topographic or arial maps, or the way rock juts and crevices along an exposed cliff.
Some of the works illustrate the connections between the geometric folding and the more expressive crumpling—they are made by folding the paper down the center, then crumpling the paper while it is folded. When the paper is smoothed out, a sort of textural Rorschach emerges in the symmetry. With the light again cast across these pieces of paper, Gates renders each once convincingly, until you get close enough to see the touch of the brush.
In some instances, Gates repaints the same image, making a copy of her own painting. Sometimes in the same scale, sometimes smaller or larger, they are displayed side by side. In other examples, she will make a mirror image or reverse the lighting, further complicating the game of symmetry already present in the origami and the Rorschach-type work.
The paintings in “EYE LEVEL” appear at first to be monochromatic/black and white, tuning the lights and shadows along a gray scale. But, as the pupils adjust to the dark palette, the viewer discovers a range of color suggesting a kind of optical iridescence. Gates’ exploration of duplication, symmetry, and a limited palette call to mind both Ad Reinhardt’s and Frank Stella’s black paintings. The methodical process, and devoted realism are influenced by Vija Celmins’ night sky paintings, and On Kawara’s date paintings.
The title, “EYE LEVEL,” reflects the directness and optical centering that these paintings point at. The words EYE and LEVEL are both palindromes/symmetrical, which is also derived from the visual language of the work. The sense of singularity and measuredness that “eye level” suggests certainly reflects the frontal quality of these paintings.
Shaina Gates earned her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD, 2005), an MA from the School of Visual Arts NY (SVA, 2008), and her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania (Upenn, 2016).
“EYE LEVEL” opens on October 6th, from 5-9pm at FOUNDATION ART SPACE, 111R Water Street, Exeter, NH. The work will be on view through October 27th.

Exeter arts & music festival
TEAM will be introducing a new arts and music festival in Swasey Parkway on Saturday, May 20th, with live performances, artist vendors, local food, and interactive activities for kids. The home grown non-profit organization has been building a steady momentum over the last two years with several concert series, festivals, and children’s programming centered around talent from the seacoast community. According to TEAM executive director Scott Ruffner, the Exeter Arts & Music Fest will be a culmination of the group’s initial efforts to bring more vibrancy to the downtown area. “We’re very excited to have secured the parkway, which is such a perfect location and amazing asset to our town. These types of landmarks were originally gifted and designed to be an extension of local culture and venues for our own musicians and performers. It’s a natural and logical progression for the bandstands we have to once again serve their intended purpose.”
TEAM will be working with several community partners as well to help place focus on their mission of keeping arts and entertainment funding local, bringing professional talent to the forefront while also inspiring emerging artists to remain in the area while pursuing a career. The Southern District YMCA will be donating a one year membership to a drawing that will occur at the fest. The president of the organization, Rob McGregor, sees this collaboration as a perfect fit, stating that “TEAM has worked diligently to bring together local artists and musicians to give the entire community dynamic programming. The YMCA looks forward to working closely with them to promote music and arts and strengthen Exeter and our region.”
The Green Alliance will also be an integral part of the event, showcasing TEAM’s commitment to bringing a new sustainable element to the seacoast economy and paving the way for other towns to embrace local art and music in the same manner many have done within the food and craft beer industries. They will be hosting an “eco-village” at the fest promoting businesses from the seacoast who may not be part of the arts scene, but still produce locally sourced and crafted products and merchandise. There will also be a “local food court”, featuring several Exeter eateries including 3 Brothers Marketplace and Laney & Lu Café.
The music line up will feature some of the region’s top bands, but all will have direct connections to Exeter. Two of the acts, Cold Engines and Gretchen & The Pickpockets, are recent New England Music Award winners. Rockspring, fronted by Exeter's own Chad Verbeck, will be providing some roots and bluegrass sounds to the fest, while critically acclaimed recording artist Qwill will bring his unique blend of soul and electronica. The Kenny Brothers will kick off the festival weekend on Friday, May 19th, with a free 5pm concert on the iconic bandstand in downtown Exeter. At the same time, Dan Searl will be playing a solo set in the 2nd Floor Gallery above Exeter Town Hall as part of the Seacoast Photographers annual show. The Opined Few will close the weekend's festivities with a live set at the town hall on Saturday night at 7:30pm.
The festival already has 20 artist vendors lined up to showcase their work, but has room for more. The deadline for submission is April 20th. The festival will start at 11am and end at 6pm, and have a suggested donation of $10. TEAM is still looking for event sponsors and volunteers, contact us at [email protected] or
call 603-512-8396 for further information.
